The Burton Regatta was first established in July 1865 on the River Trent, making it one of the oldest annual sporting events in the UK.
It is pretty much taken for granted in the town but few realise that because of the wide course between the Leicester Line and Ferry bridges and exceptional access to the river from its bank, it is one of the most major rowing regattas in the rowing calendar.
Rivalry has always been strong between Burton Leander and Trent rowing clubs both situated close to the Trent Bridge.
