W H Mason & Son was established William Mason, brother Walter, relative Henry Mason, who previously had hiw own carpenter business, and a fourth partner. It was located in a mill on Hawkins lane where it was to remain until 1952.

Felled trees were purchased and transported to the mill by a heavy horse drawn trailer ready for sawing. The mill only employed around 16 people so some heavy manoeuvring was required.

New tree acquisition

Some years later, a wood lathe was installed and woodturning became a significant part of the business largely servicing the many breweries in the town.

The company still exists which makes it one of the oldest businesses in town which has to be something to be proud about.
