Rag Week

The Burton Technical College Rag Magazine

In local history, this refers to the charity fundraising magazine produced by the students’ union at Burton Technical College (later Burton College) in Burton upon Trent. [1, 2]

  • The Tradition: Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the college hosted a massively popular annual “Rag Parade” or “Rag Day”. Students built intricate floats, dressed up in costumes, and paraded through the town centre to raise thousands of pounds for local charities. Burton’s event was considered one of the highest-earning non-university RAG campaigns in the country
  • The Magazine: To support the fundraising, students sold a “Rag Mag”—a booklet packed with risqué jokes, parodies, and light-hearted social satire.
