The town hall was deemed unsuitable as offices for the town commissioners established in 1779. Nonetheless, after a number of meetings at the close by Angel Inn owned by one of their own, Sydney Evershed, it struggled on until it was in such a state that the Angel Inn became the unofficial Town Hall until 1853 !
