Rather than rely on the limited Burton Corporation Fie Brigade, the Bass Brewery established its own private brigade that operated out of the brewery’s own fire station to protect its extensive malting and brewing facilities.
The brigade was comprised of 21 men, including four specialized engine drivers whose role was to fire up the steam-powered engines and manage the pumps.
